Before starting any web design project there are a few things that need to be in place so that things run smoothly. Below are the basic essentials you need to kickstart your project.
To create a website you need to buy a domain. Never let your designer or developer buy the domain for you. Buy it yourself under your credit card so you have complete control in case anything goes wrong. A domain is like your phone number, it is unique to you so pick a good one, and one that is not too long or hard to remember.
You can buy your domain from many places. I especially recommend the following places to buy your domain.
Just pick which one is cheapest for you.
TSO Host - Domain and Hosting
GoDaddy - Domain only
123 REG - Domain only
Some people ask if they should buy ".com" or ".co.uk" I would say if you can, and you have the budget for it, buy both.
If the domain name is like your phone number then hosting is like your address. Your website is just a bunch of files that get stored on a computer called a server. When people type in your domain name, it would connect to the server and call up your website to be displayed on the visitors browser.
I provide hosting for all my clients at a great rate that is affordable for all individuals. Hosting is paid for either yearly or monthly.
You can, of course, buy hosting elsewhere. I would not recommend buying Windows hosting. Linux is the way to go for WordPress. If you are unsure where to get hosting from let me know, and I will recommend a service for you. Currently, I would recommend Site5 hosting.
Creating a website can be daunting when you don’t know where to start. Building a sitemap, is like drawing out the foundations of your house. You know where the living room is going to be and you have an idea what furniture you’re going to put in it.
A sitemap is like a list of pages that you have on your website. but is structured in a way that is clear from our perspective how our visitors get from one place to another. You don’t need anything fancy to create a sitemap, just a simple pad and pen would do the trick.
It’s important that you have a fair idea what content is going to be on the site. I can help by sourcing videos, and stock imagery and graphics if needed. Please don’t be daunted by this. The content does not need to be perfect the first time around. It’s always good to have most of the content before our project starts
If you don’t know anything about web design or what your budget should be I can tell you that prices will be different for different designers. Some can be a little as a few hundred pounds some up to 100 thousand. Some may have staff to pay for, some may have been in the industry for years, it all really depends on what you want and what you can afford and whether you go for a freelancer or an agency.
On average a domain cost about £10 a year
On average hosting is priced at £60 to £150 a year
I do not have a fixed rate for websites that I design or build. Every project is unique and requires a different amount of time and effort; because of this, pricing is very much dependant on project needs.
I’m happy to schedule a call with you to discuss your project’s details, and once I’m satisfied with the brief, I will be able to give you a quote. Alternatively you can fill in my project planner beforehand and once submitted I can call you back to discuss the specifics.
